CARD STORY: On The Other Side of the Membrane

Chapter One

(Hallway)

Akira: I wonder what’s for lunch…

Riquet: Sir Sage, are you going for lunch? May I come with you?

Akira: Of course. What do you think is on the menu today, Riquet?

Riquet: Hmm… It’ll be nice if omelettes are.
But all the food Nero makes is delicious, so I’d be happy with anything.

Akira: You’re right. Thanks to Nero, I always look forward to mealtimes.

Riquet: Every night before I sleep, I think about what Nero will prepare the next day, and it makes me so very happy.

Akira: Me too. Coming to this world all of a sudden, there were lots of things that left me unsettled.
Nero’s cooking was what first gave me something to look forward to.

Riquet: Hehe, that makes two of us, Sir Sage.

(Dining Hall)

Heathcliff: ...Shino, come on, cheer up.

Shino: It’s not like I’m in a bad mood.

Akira: (Oh?)

Nero:

Akira: (What’s with this heavy atmosphere… Did Shino and Heath get into an argument again…?)

Akira: I-Is everything alright?

Shino: Yeah, it’s nothing.

(footsteps)

Heathcliff: Ah, Shino…

Akira: Um, Heath. Could it be that you had a fight with Shino…?

Heathcliff: No, nothing happened between us. That… He and Nero…

Akira: Eh, he had a fight with Nero!? That’s unusual...

Nero: Haha…

Riquet: I’ve seen Nero get mad at Shino, but I can’t imagine Nero angering Shino.
Nero, if Shino did something bad, I’ll guide him back onto the correct path.

Nero: Nah, it’s fine. It’s not something you’d call a fight, anyway.
...It’s ‘cuz of me that Shino’s mood got ruined.

Akira: Because of you, Nero?
I can’t really picture it…

Riquet: Was it because today’s lunch isn’t Shino’s favourite lemon pie?

Nero: That’s not the case. Thanks for the concern, but don’t worry ‘bout it.
Anyway, you came to have lunch, right? I’ll prep it right away, so the two of you settle down and give me a moment.

Riquet: Nero, I’ll help with handing out the plates.

Nero: Right, thanks. Heath, sorry ‘bout that too.

Heathcliff: No, I’m sorry too. I’ll try talking to Shino later.

Akira: (Nero looks unbothered, but I’m a little concerned because the two of them don’t fight often...)

Chapter Two

(Library)

Nero:

Shino:

Akira: (It’s been a few days since that incident, but the atmosphere surrounding them both feels tense…)

Akira: Faust, do you think it’s alright to leave those two be?

Faust: ...So this is why you wanted to sit in on our lesson, huh. ...Even if that’s the case, why did you come to me?

Akira: It’s rare for Nero to have quarrels with anyone, so I’m somewhat worried. And you’re the mentor of the Eastern wizards, so…

Faust: You’re right that it’s unusual, but isn’t it fine?

Akira: Y-You think so?

Faust: It’s probably due to what happened during our mission the other day.
You should ask Nero the rest yourself.

Faust: There’s no need to worry about Shino, either.
It seems that he’s been talking to Heath.

Akira: Got it.
I’ll speak to Nero directly.

(Nero’s room)

Nero: It’s rare for ya to visit my room so suddenly. Did something happen?

Akira: Actually, I heard from Faust earlier that your fight with Shino was probably due to the mission you were assigned on.
I’m the one who requests the missions of everyone, so even if it might be unnecessary, I’m still worried for both of you.

Nero: Haha… Teach sure is watching us closely.

Nero: Alright, take a seat. I’ll make some coffee.

Akira: Sorry for the trouble, and thank you.

(coffee pouring)

Nero: It’s not like we intended to argue. Did Shino and I look so gloomy as to warrant your concern?

Akira: Rather than that, I’d say the air around both of you seems stiffer compared to when you’re talking to Heath.

Nero: ...Mr Sage, what do you think of Shino and Heath’s relationship?

Akira: Shino and Heath? Hmm… They’re childhood friends who are very close.

Nero: Right? They’ve got a heartwarming, youthful and close relationship.

Akira: They get into arguments often, but it feels like that’s exactly because of how close they are.

Nero: Yeah, that’s right. On that mission the other day, all things considered, the two of them worked together and did their best.

Nero: ...It also involved a bit of a fight with a magical beast. Shino charged right through to the offense.
Thanks to that, we completed the mission early, but he got injured.

Akira: Is that so!? I wasn’t aware…

Nero: It wasn’t a big deal, so we didn’t tell you.
Faust’s magic fixed him up right away.

Nero: But Heath looked like he couldn’t help but feel worried anyway… and I lashed out at Shino without thinking.
He laughed it off, saying things like this happen all the time and we should just get used to it. So it kinda made me want to step in…

Akira: Nero…

Nero: I shoulda just left it to Faust. That kinda fussing around’s a teacher’s job, ain’t it.
But I really wanted to get my word in no matter what. You know what happened after.
Sorry, Mr Sage. That kid didn’t do anything wrong. I’m the one at fault for saying unnecessary things.

Chapter Three

Akira: ...Nero, when you first came to live at the Magic Residence, you said you couldn’t live together with anyone. Don’t you think that’s changed a little?

Nero:

Akira: I think that’s why you were concerned for Shino and spoke to him. I don’t think it was excessive...

Akira: ...Ah, I’m sorry! I’m saying such high and mighty things even though I don’t know anything…

Nero: No…

(knocking)

Shino: Oi, Nero. What, even the Sage’s here.

Akira: Shino!?

Nero: Woah! You surprised me. Don’t just come in from the window.

Shino: Cheer up already.

Nero: This is… a flower bouquet?

Shino: You keep sulking, so I picked them for you.

Nero: ...Ahaha! Picking flowers to make amends, what a cute thing to do.

Shino: Oi, don’t pat my head so roughly. What’re you gonna do if I end up shrinking?

Nero: Haha, my bad, my bad. ...Thanks, Shino.
But don’t you make us worry too much, either.

Shino: I got that already.
Next time I face an enemy of that scale, I’ll crush it without getting a single injury.

Nero: That’s not the problem here, y’know.
Well, all things in moderation, ‘kay.

Akira: (The Eastern wizards don’t flaunt their friendship with each other, but it's wonderful how they carefully show concern for one another. I’m glad they could make amends.)

(Hallway)

Akira: Yawn… I wonder what’s for breakfast today.

Bradley: Huge yawn ya makin’ there, Sage.

Akira: G-Good morning. Are you also heading to breakfast now, Bradley?
… Oh, there’s snow on your clothes. Did you go somewhere?

Bradley: Yeah, to the North for a little… Nah, it’s nothing. I’m tired, so Imma go sleep. See ya.

Akira: Goodnight… Could it be that he was sent flying somewhere by a sneeze again…

(Dining Hall)

Akira: Huh, Nero’s not here. It looks like breakfast isn’t ready yet, either.

(Kitchen)

Nero: Sorry, Mr Sage. I haven’t made breakfast yet, do you mind waiting a little?

Akira: Of course. ...Is that lemon pie you’re making?

Nero: Yeah, I thought I’d make it for Shino, as thanks for yesterday’s flowers.

Akira: That’s nice! I’m sure Shino will be delighted.

Nero: Ah, could you get me the stardust sugar over there? It’s in that basket close to you.

Akira: This?

Akira: (If I’m not mistaken, this is harvested together with shining snow from the Northern Country. I don’t think it was here yesterday, though…)

Nero: Thanks. And… This is ‘bout what we talked about yesterday, but.
Honestly, I think it’s still tough for me to stay connected with anybody in this world.
But even so, I find this a comfortable place to be.
Thanks for making such a place for me, Mr Sage.

Akira: Nero… Likewise.
It’s thanks to your cooking that I’m doing well, even in this world.
Thank you very much for being my emotional support.

Nero: Haha, you’re welcome.
Now then, what do you wanna eat this morning?

Translator's Notes:

  • "Membrane" in the story title is a reference to Chapter 10 of Nero's affection story, where he says that cooking is a 'membrane' through which he interacts with the world and people around him.

  • Akira quoting Nero at the start of Chapter 3 is a reference to what Nero says in Chapter 18.2 of the main story.

CARD EPISODE: A New Dish

Akira: Have you learnt any new recipes since coming to the Magic Residence, Nero?

Nero: Hmm… Not too many, but there have been a few.

Nero: In the first place, the meals I served at my shop were for the common folk. Heath and Mr Prince have been teaching me about grand dishes too.

Nero: I also asked Rutile and the others a little about their countryside fare. Depending on the country you live in, the way you use ingredients varies, so it’s interesting.

Akira: I see… The range of your repertoire is related to everyone here, huh.

Nero: I mean, the most unusual ones are what I’ve heard from you though, Mr Sage. All of the dishes are unfamiliar to me, so it’s motivating to make them.

Akira: Likewise, it makes me happy to be able to eat food that’s similar to what I had back in my world.

Nero: That’s an honour. ...So, what do you want to eat?

Akira: No, I wasn’t really trying to request…

(stomach growls)

Akira: Ah. Ahaha…

Nero: Well, should I try making something that you haven’t had in the Magic Residence yet?
New recipe suggestions and requests are welcome.

Akira: Yay! Actually, there’s this dish in my country...
